Ban Ki-moon is a South Korean diplomat and politician who served as the eighth Secretary-General of the United Nations from January 1, 2007, to December 31, 2016. He was born on June 13, 1944, in Eumseong County, North Chungcheong Province, South Korea. He studied international relations at Seoul National University and later attended Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government. His diplomatic career started in 1970 when he joined South Korea's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where he worked for over three decades in various roles both domestically and internationally.
Throughout his career, Ban held many high-level positions, including Ambassador to Austria and Slovenia, Chief of Staff to Foreign Minister Han Seung-soo, and Deputy Minister for Policy Planning and International Organizations. He also served as South Korea's Permanent Representative to the United Nations and played a key role in South Korea's successful bid to co-host the 2002 FIFA World Cup.
