Biography

Jonas Erik Altberg, also known as Basshunter, is a Swedish singer, record producer, songwriter, and DJ born on December 22, 1984, in Halmstad. He rose to international fame for his bass-heavy Eurodance music, especially with hits like "Boten Anna" and "All I Ever Wanted," which topped European charts. His stage name highlights his music's signature bass sound, a hallmark of his electronic dance music.

Altberg grew up in Halmstad and started his music journey as a teen singing in his mom's choir. He began producing music at 17 and started performing locally early in his career. In 2006, he moved to Malmö, marking his entry into the mainstream music scene. That year, he self-released "Boten Anna" as a free download, gaining significant attention before signing with Extensive Music and Warner Music Sweden for official releases.

Basshunter's discography includes five studio albums: The Bassmachine (2004), LOL (2006), Now You're Gone – The Album (2008), Bass Generation (2009), and Calling Time (2013). His 2007 hit "Now You're Gone," featuring Bazzheadz, was based on Bazzheadz's track that used the melody of "Boten Anna" with new lyrics. Besides his solo work, he has written songs for other artists like El Capon, Mange Makers, and Lana Scolaro.

Throughout his career, Basshunter has received many awards, such as the European Border Breakers Award, Musikförläggarnas pris, Radioactive Hit of the Year Era, Music Moves Europe Award, World Music Award for World's Best-Selling Swedish Artist, and several others. He has also appeared on TV, including the seventh series of Celebrity Big Brother, the Swedish game show Fångarna på fortet, and the British quiz show Weakest Link. According to Svenska Dagbladet in 2009, his record sales surpassed 3 million copies, and by May 2024, he was the 60th most-streamed Swedish artist on Spotify with over 803 million streams. He is married to Tina Makhia Khayatsadeh.

Before Fame

Basshunter got his start in music by singing in a choir led by his mother, giving him basic vocal and musical skills. Growing up in Halmstad in the late 1990s and early 2000s, he became interested in the electronic dance music that was taking off across Europe. He went to Kattegattgymnasiet and then Sturegymnasiet for school.

At 17, Altberg started tinkering with music production, learning how to make electronic tracks at a time when digital audio workstations were becoming more available to beginners. His early music was shaped by the Eurodance and electronic scenes that were strong in Scandinavian countries. The growth of internet file-sharing gave him access to international electronic music and later allowed him to share his own music widely, helping lead to his hit "Boten Anna" going viral.
