Biography
Lata Mangeshkar, originally named Hema Mangeshkar and born on September 28, 1929, in Indore, India, became one of the most famed playback singers in the history of Indian cinema. Known as the 'Nightingale of India,' she also held titles like 'Queen of Melody' and 'Voice of the Millennium' due to her exceptional vocal prowess and extensive contributions to Indian music. Her career spanned eight decades, during which she recorded songs in over thirty-six Indian languages and several foreign languages, with a primary focus on Hindustani, Bengali, and Marathi.
Mangeshkar's approach to music was marked by great discipline and deep reverence for her craft. For her, recording barefoot in the studio was a sign of respect, viewing it as a sacred space. Despite her perfectionism during recording sessions, she chose not to listen to her released songs, explaining that doing so would lead her to find faults in her performances. This combination of careful preparation and detachment after recording showed her unique relationship with her work.
Throughout her career, Mangeshkar received a multitude of awards and accolades both in India and internationally. The Government of India awarded her the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1989 and the Bharat Ratna in 2001, making her the second singer to receive India's highest civilian award. France honored her by naming her an Officer of the National Order of the Legion of Honour in 2009. She also won three National Film Awards for Best Female Playback Singer in 1972, 1974, and 1990, along with numerous Filmfare and regional cinema awards.
Among her achievements, Mangeshkar was the first Indian playback singer to perform at London's Royal Albert Hall in 1974. She once held the Guinness World Record as the most recorded artist in history before being surpassed by her sister, Asha Bhosle. Her voice was not only commercially successful but also became synonymous with Indian cinema's golden age, helping to shape the sound of Bollywood music for generations. Lata Mangeshkar passed away on February 6, 2022, in Mumbai, leaving behind an unmatched musical legacy.
Before Fame
Born into a musical family in Indore, Lata Mangeshkar was the eldest daughter of classical singer and theater actor Pandit Deenanath Mangeshkar. She got her early start in music through her father's work in Marathi musical theater, where she first performed as a child actor. After her father's untimely death in 1942, when she was just thirteen, Mangeshkar took on the responsibility of supporting her family, which sped up her entry into the professional music industry.
In the 1940s, the Indian film industry was growing rapidly, with sound being integrated into cinema offering new opportunities for playback singers. Mangeshkar's early career coincided with the golden age of Hindi cinema, a time when music became a crucial part of film storytelling. Her distinctive high-pitched voice was initially met with resistance from some music directors who preferred the deeper, more classical singing styles of the time. However, her perseverance and unique tone eventually changed the standards for playback singing in Indian cinema.
