Biography

Bianca Jagger, born Blanca Pérez-Mora Macías on May 2, 1945, in Managua, Nicaragua, is a human rights activist and former actress and model who became well-known internationally in the 1970s. Educated at Sciences Po in Paris, she developed a politically active perspective that shaped her public life. Her studies in political science and international relations provided the foundation for the advocacy work she focused on in the following decades.

Jagger gained global recognition through her marriage to Mick Jagger, the lead singer of the Rolling Stones. They married in Saint-Tropez in May 1971. The couple was frequently photographed and talked about, and Bianca became a fashion and nightlife icon of the 1970s, famously linked to New York's Studio 54. She was added to the International Best Dressed Hall of Fame in 1976, solidifying her status as a style icon of that time. The marriage ended in divorce in 1979, but she remained in the public eye.

After her marriage ended, Jagger used her public presence for humanitarian and political causes. She became heavily involved in addressing human rights abuses in Central America in the 1980s, a time of significant conflict in her home region. She visited conflict areas, witnessed atrocities, and drew international attention to the suffering of civilians, especially in Nicaragua and El Salvador. Her work during this time established her as a serious voice in human rights, beyond just being a celebrity activist.

Later, Jagger broadened her focus to include environmental issues, indigenous rights, and climate justice. She founded and chairs the Bianca Jagger Human Rights Foundation, dedicated to human rights, social justice, and environmental protection. She is also a Council of Europe goodwill ambassador, serves on the Executive Director's Leadership Council of Amnesty International USA, and is a trustee of the Amazon Charitable Trust. In 2004, she received the Right Livelihood Award, often called an alternative Nobel Prize, celebrating her significant contributions to humanity.

In her career, Jagger has used public speaking, lobbying, journalism, and media to pressure governments and international institutions on issues like the death penalty and deforestation in the Amazon. Her Nicaraguan background and personal experience with political instability give her work a sense of urgency that sets her apart from many activists. Now in her late seventies, she continues to be an active and outspoken voice in global human rights and environmental discussions.

Before Fame

Bianca Pérez-Mora Macías grew up in Managua, Nicaragua, when the country was ruled by the Somoza family. Experiencing political repression and social inequality in Central America made her aware of power dynamics, injustice, and how ordinary people are affected by those in authority. She had a strong academic drive and eventually made her way to Paris to study at Sciences Po, a top school for political science and international affairs.

In Paris in the late 1960s, a time of student protests and political excitement, she was influenced by cultural and intellectual ideas that shaped her views. In 1970, she met Mick Jagger at a party, and their relationship brought her into the public eye. Although initially recognized for her connection with the Rolling Stones and her fashion sense, her education and political awareness from Paris remained crucial to her identity, leading her to become an activist in her later years.
