Biography

Daniel Ortega Saavedra was born on November 11, 1945, in La Libertad, Nicaragua. He became a key figure in Nicaraguan politics through his work with the Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN), which overthrew the Somoza dictatorship in 1979. Ortega first became president in 1985 as part of the revolutionary junta that led Nicaragua during a time of civil war and international conflict. His first presidency lasted until 1990 when he lost to Violeta Chamorro in the elections.

In the 1980s, Ortega's government faced major challenges, including a U.S.-backed contra insurgency and economic sanctions from the Reagan administration. The Sandinista government adopted socialist policies and had close ties with Cuba and the Soviet Union during the Cold War. After losing power in 1990, Ortega stayed active in opposition politics and ran for president unsuccessfully in 1996 and 2001.

Ortega was re-elected in 2007 after winning the presidential election with the most votes. His second term has seen constitutional changes that removed term limits, allowing him to stay in power longer than usual democratic practices would allow. He is married to Rosario Murillo, who is his vice president and is considered a strong political partner in running Nicaragua.

His education includes studies at the Peoples' Friendship University of Russia, showing the international connections that were important in his political development. Throughout his career, Ortega has presented himself as an anti-imperialist leader, often criticizing U.S. foreign policy in Latin America while keeping ties with leftist governments in the area.

Before Fame

Ortega's journey to political prominence started in his youth when he joined student movements against the Somoza family dictatorship that had controlled Nicaragua for decades. He got involved with the FSLN in the 1960s, taking part in urban guerrilla activities and spending time in prison for his revolutionary efforts. His commitment to armed resistance against the Somoza regime placed him in a leadership role within the Sandinista movement.

He rose during a time when Latin America was experiencing widespread revolutionary movements inspired by the Cuban Revolution. Nicaragua was under the authoritarian rule of Anastasio Somoza Debayle, whose government was marked by corruption, repression, and close ties to the United States, creating the right conditions for opposition movements like the FSLN.
