Biography

Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, born on 21 September 1988 in Karachi, Sindh, Pakistan, is the son of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto and former President Asif Ali Zardari. His grandfather, Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, also served as both Prime Minister and President of Pakistan. Growing up in one of Pakistan's most well-known political families, Bilawal attended Karachi Grammar School and Rashid School for Boys, before studying Philosophy, Politics, and Economics at Christ Church, Oxford.

Bilawal entered politics under tragic circumstances in December 2007, after his mother, Benazir Bhutto, was assassinated following a rally in Rawalpindi. At just nineteen, he was announced as the chairman of the Pakistan People's Party (PPP), with his father Asif Ali Zardari as co-chairman to assist while he completed his studies. This decision was seen as a way to keep the Bhutto family at the helm of the PPP, a party founded by his grandfather in 1967.

After finishing his studies, Bilawal became more active in politics. He was elected to the National Assembly in 2018, representing a constituency in Sindh. He built his profile both in Pakistan and internationally, advocating for democratic governance and social development. In the 2024 general elections, he was re-elected to the National Assembly from the new constituency NA-194 Larkana-I, solidifying his support in Sindh.

His most significant role so far was being appointed as Pakistan's 37th Minister of Foreign Affairs in April 2022, following Prime Minister Imran Khan's ouster through a vote of no confidence. At 33, Bilawal was one of the youngest foreign ministers globally. From 2022 to 2023, he represented Pakistan on international stages, discussing issues like climate change, regional security, and economic cooperation. He spoke at the United Nations General Assembly and met with officials from various countries, enhancing Pakistan's diplomatic presence during tough times for its economy and governance.

Bilawal Bhutto Zardari continues to lead the PPP and is a key figure in Pakistani opposition politics. His career shows both the opportunities and challenges of being part of a family closely linked with the PPP's history and Pakistan's democratic journey.

Before Fame

Bilawal Bhutto Zardari grew up surrounded by high-stakes politics and frequent instability. His childhood was shaped by his mother Benazir Bhutto's two terms as Prime Minister of Pakistan and the ongoing political turmoil around his father Asif Ali Zardari, who spent years detained on corruption charges. This upbringing, split between Pakistan and abroad, gave Bilawal an early and direct understanding of political power and its personal impacts.

He attended Karachi Grammar School and Rashid School for Boys for his secondary education before going to Christ Church, Oxford. While he was at Oxford, his mother was killed, ending his relatively safe academic life and pushing him into the chairmanship of one of Pakistan's largest political parties. His shift from student to party chairman at nineteen set the path for a political career under constant public scrutiny.
