Biography

Binali Yıldırım was born on December 20, 1955, in Sivas Province, Turkey. He studied engineering at Istanbul Technical University, focusing on marine engineering, which later shaped his career in transportation and maritime affairs. His engineering background laid the groundwork for his involvement in major infrastructure projects across Turkey.

Yıldırım's political journey began after a successful stint in the private sector. He served as chairman of the board of Directors of Istanbul Fast Ferries Company (İDO) from 1994 to 2000, gaining essential experience in maritime transportation management. After the Justice and Development Party (AKP) was founded, he was elected as a Member of Parliament for Istanbul's first electoral district during the 2002 general election, starting his long career in national politics.

As Minister of Transport under Prime Ministers Abdullah Gül and later Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Yıldırım supervised major infrastructure projects that transformed Turkey's transportation network. His ministry led the development of the Marmaray underwater rail tunnel between Europe and Asia, high-speed rail lines, and expanded the country's airports and roads significantly. In 2011, the portfolios of Maritime and Communications were merged with the Ministry of Transport, making him Minister of Transport, Maritime and Communication.

After a short break from the cabinet in 2013, Yıldırım ran for Mayor of İzmir in 2014 but lost to the incumbent from the Republican People's Party. He returned to government as a special advisor to Erdoğan and was reappointed as Transport Minister following the November 2015 general election. He reached the peak of his political career when he was chosen to replace Ahmet Davutoğlu as AKP leader in May 2016, becoming Prime Minister afterward. He was Turkey's 27th and last prime minister from 2016 to 2018, ending with the country's shift to a presidential system. After this constitutional change, Yıldırım was Speaker of the Grand National Assembly from 2018 to 2019, solidifying his role as a key political figure during the AKP era.

Before Fame

Growing up in Sivas Province during the 1960s and 1970s, Yıldırım saw Turkey working to modernize its infrastructure and economy. He decided to study engineering at Istanbul Technical University, showing the country's focus on technical education and development at that time. His choice to specialize in marine engineering fit with Turkey's strategic position as a maritime nation controlling important waterways between Europe and Asia.

His early career in the private sector, especially his leadership role at Istanbul Fast Ferries Company, matched Turkey's increased interest in improving urban transportation systems. In the 1990s, there was significant economic liberalization and infrastructure investment, giving technically skilled people opportunities to help develop the country. This background prepared Yıldırım for his later political career, which focused on transportation and infrastructure policy.
