Biography

Binnya Ran II (1469–1526) was the 17th king of Hanthawaddy in Burma, ruling from 1492 until his death in 1526. He was born and grew up in Bago, the capital of Hanthawaddy. He became king during a time of regional tension between the powers of Lower and Upper Burma. Although he was known for his gentle nature and religious devotion, his reign began with a ruthless move to secure his rule: he ordered the execution of royal family members and any potential heirs to eliminate threats to his throne.

In the early years of his reign, he dealt quickly with military challenges. When Mingyi Nyo, ruler of Toungoo and then a vassal of the Kingdom of Ava, tested Binnya Ran II's power by raiding Hanthawaddy territory, Binnya Ran II responded by attacking Toungoo directly. This show of force was effective, and Hanthawaddy faced no further invasions during his time as king.

One of the most memorable events of his rule occurred in 1501 when he led a large army up the Irrawaddy River to worship at the Shwezigon Pagoda in Pagan, a sacred site within Ava’s territory. When the king of Prome, located between Ava and Hanthawaddy, tried to block his path, Binnya Ran II reportedly claimed he could conquer both Prome and Ava but only wanted to worship at the pagoda. He completed his pilgrimage without conflict and returned to Bago peacefully, reinforcing his image as both a devout and strong leader.

Binnya Ran II ruled Hanthawaddy for about 34 years, a time of stability in a region often troubled by dynastic disputes and territorial fights. He died in Bago in 1526, leaving behind a kingdom that remained independent and intact throughout his rule. His reign is often seen as one of the last stable periods for Hanthawaddy before it eventually fell to the expanding Toungoo Dynasty in the following decades.

Before Fame

Binnya Ran II was born in 1469 in Bago, the capital of the Mon-speaking Kingdom of Hanthawaddy, one of the main political powers in Lower Burma during the fifteenth century. The kingdom was a key player in the region, and Bago was a major center of Mon culture, Theravada Buddhism, and maritime trade.

Growing up in the royal court of Hanthawaddy, Binnya Ran II lived in a time when the kingdom was dealing with complicated political relations with its neighbors, especially with the Kingdom of Ava to the north and other smaller states in between. He became king in 1492 at about 23 years old, taking over a kingdom that needed strong leadership and careful diplomacy to maintain its status among rival powers.
