Biography
Bohuslav Hasištejnský z Lobkovic (1461–1510) was a prominent Bohemian nobleman, humanist scholar, and writer who played a significant role in the intellectual life of late medieval Central Europe. Born at Hasištejn Castle near Kadaň in Bohemia, he belonged to the distinguished House of Lobkowicz, one of the most influential aristocratic families in the region. Despite his Bohemian origins, he explicitly identified himself as German and wrote exclusively in Latin and German, rejecting Czech as barbaric.
His educational journey took him to Italy, where he studied at the Universities of Bologna and Ferrara, earning a doctorate in law in 1482. During his time in Italy, he converted from Utraquism to Catholicism, a decision that would influence his later ecclesiastical career. Upon returning to Bohemia, he was appointed provost of Vyšehrad in Prague after 1483, a prestigious position that reflected his scholarly reputation and noble status.
Between 1490 and 1491, Lobkovic undertook an ambitious journey to the Holy Land and Egypt, earning him the nickname 'the Czech Ulysses' for his extensive travels. This expedition was unusual for his time and demonstrated both his adventurous spirit and scholarly curiosity about distant lands. His travels provided material for his later writings and enhanced his reputation as a learned Renaissance humanist.
Lobkovic's literary output was diverse and substantial, encompassing philosophical prose, correspondence, poetry, and satirical works. His most notable satirical piece, 'Ad sanctum Venceslaum satira' (1489), critically examined Bohemian national life and customs. He achieved the prestigious title of poeta laureatus, recognizing his contributions to Renaissance literature. Though he was elected bishop of Olomouc, the Pope refused to confirm his appointment. Following this setback, he retired to his beloved Hasištejn Castle, which he called his 'Tusculum,' where he lived surrounded by a circle of intellectual friends and fellow writers until his death on November 11, 1510.
