Biography

Brendan James Fraser was born on December 3, 1968, in Indianapolis, Indiana, to Canadian parents. He spent much of his childhood moving between various countries due to his father's work in the Canadian foreign service, living in places like Europe, Egypt, and Canada. This international upbringing introduced him to different cultures and languages early on. Fraser attended Upper Canada College in Toronto before studying theater at the Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle, Washington.

Fraser's big break came in 1992 with lead roles in the comedy "Encino Man" and the drama "School Ties," showing off his ability to handle both comedic and serious roles. He gained more recognition with roles in "With Honors" (1994) and "George of the Jungle" (1997), becoming a leading actor in Hollywood comedies. His career hit new heights when he played adventurer Rick O'Connell in "The Mummy" (1999), which was a huge box office hit and led to a successful franchise.

During his peak years, Fraser showed his range with dramatic roles in acclaimed films like "Gods and Monsters" (1998), "The Quiet American" (2002), and the Oscar-winning "Crash" (2004). He also starred in fantasy and adventure films like "Bedazzled" (2000), "Inkheart" (2008), and "Journey to the Center of the Earth" (2008). However, in the late 2000s, his career faced setbacks due to poor box office results, health issues requiring multiple surgeries, personal challenges including his divorce from Afton Smith, and the emotional impact of a sexual assault he experienced in 2003 by Philip Berk, then-president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.

Fraser began to regain prominence with TV roles, including in Showtime's "The Affair" (2016-2017), FX's "Trust" (2018), and HBO Max's "Doom Patrol" (2019-2023). His film career made a significant comeback with Steven Soderbergh's "No Sudden Move" (2021) and reached a peak with Darren Aronofsky's "The Whale" (2022). His role as Charlie, a reclusive English teacher battling obesity and grief, received widespread critical praise and several awards, including the Oscar for Best Actor in 2023. This achievement marked a triumphant return for Fraser and cemented his status as one of the most respected actors of his generation.

Before Fame

Fraser moved around a lot during his early years because of his father's job with the Canadian foreign service. Their family lived in various places across Europe, Egypt, and North America. This constant moving helped him get used to different cultures and made him adaptable, skills that benefited him later as an actor. He went to Upper Canada College, a well-known prep school in Toronto, before heading to Seattle to study at the Cornish College of the Arts.

At Cornish College, Fraser focused on theater, honing the physical comedy skills that became his signature. He took part in a variety of stage productions and learned classical acting techniques, as well as exploring improvisation and character work. After graduating, he moved to Los Angeles in the early 1990s. There, he initially found it hard to get jobs, picking up small TV roles and commercial gigs before snagging his breakthrough roles in 1992 that kicked off his film career.
