Biography

Concino Concini, 1st Marquis d'Ancre (23 November 1569 – 24 April 1617), was an Italian politician who became one of the most influential figures in early 17th-century France. Born in Florence to a modest family, he entered the French court through his marriage to Leonora Dori, who worked as a lady-in-waiting to Marie de Medici. When Marie became Queen of France and later regent after her husband Henry IV was assassinated in 1610, Concini's influence grew significantly.

As the favored adviser of Queen regent Marie de Medici, Concini effectively controlled French politics while Louis XIII was still a minor. He gained immense wealth and numerous titles, including the Marquis d'Ancre and Marshal of France, despite lacking military experience. His quick rise and foreign background made him very unpopular with the French nobility, who felt overshadowed by what they saw as an ambitious Italian newcomer. Concini's administration was plagued by financial mismanagement and political chaos, as he tried to maintain control while enriching himself and his allies.

Concini's power peaked between 1610 and 1617, a period during which he dominated the royal council and influenced major policy decisions. He arranged marriages for Louis XIII and his sister, negotiated treaties with other countries, and tried to suppress noble uprisings against royal authority. However, his heavy-handed methods and reliance on Marie de Medici's support made his position highly unstable as the young king grew older.

The end came quickly in April 1617 when the sixteen-year-old Louis XIII, prompted by his favorite Charles d'Albert de Luynes, decided to break free from his mother's regency. On April 24, 1617, Concini was assassinated on the king's orders as he entered the Louvre Palace. His death ended Marie de Medici's regency and marked the start of Louis XIII's personal rule. Concini's wife Leonora was later tried for witchcraft and executed, and their amassed wealth was seized by the crown.

Before Fame

Concino Concini was born into a humble family in Florence, part of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany. He climbed the social ladder by marrying Leonora Dori, who had become a lady-in-waiting to Marie de Medici before her marriage to the future Henry IV of France. This connection was vital when Concini joined his wife at the French court around 1600.

In the early 17th century, European monarchies were changing, and Italian advisors and courtiers were often sought for their perceived elegance and political skill. The French court, especially, was influenced by Italian culture and politics due to Marie de Medici's Florentine ties. This atmosphere offered chances for ambitious foreigners like Concini to improve their standing, but it also caused resentment among established French nobility who saw these newcomers as threats to traditional power dynamics.
