Biography
Michael Essien was born on December 3, 1982, in Accra, Ghana. He went to St. Augustine's College before starting a professional football career. He began with Liberty Professionals in Ghana and moved to France in 2000 to join SC Bastia. Over three seasons at Bastia, Essien played in more than 60 matches and quickly became known as a talented midfielder, which led to his transfer to Olympique Lyonnais in 2003. At Lyon, Essien's career took off as he helped the club win back-to-back Ligue 1 titles in 2003-04 and 2004-05. His outstanding performance earned him the Ligue 1 Player of the Year award in 2005, making him a highly sought-after midfielder in Europe. In 2005, Chelsea signed Essien for a transfer fee of £24.4 million, making him the most expensive African footballer at the time. His eight years at Stamford Bridge were very successful, as he helped win two Premier League titles in 2006 and 2010, three FA Cups, and one League Cup. The highlight of his club career was Chelsea's UEFA Champions League win in the 2011-12 season, although he was a runner-up in the 2007-08 edition of the same competition. Essien's powerful shots earned him two Chelsea Goal of the Season awards in 2006-07 and 2008-09.
