Bryan Adams
Canadian rock musician and photographer known for hits like "Summer of '69" and "(Everything I Do) I Do It for You".
Biography
Bryan Guy Adams was born on November 5, 1959, in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. He went to several schools as a child, including Henry Munro Middle School, Colonel By Secondary School, Argyle Secondary, Sutherland Secondary, and the American International School Vienna, which reflects his constant moving around and exposure to different cultures. This diverse education later helped shape his global appeal as both a musician and photographer.
Adams kicked off his music career in the late 1970s, releasing his self-titled debut album in 1980 at 20 years old. He made a big splash with the 1983 album Cuts Like a Knife, making him a key figure in North American rock. The album featured the title track and "Straight from the Heart," his first U.S. top-ten hit. He hit his commercial peak with the 1984 album Reckless, the first by a Canadian artist to earn diamond status in Canada. This album produced several hit singles, including "Run to You," "Summer of '69," and the chart-topping ballad "Heaven."
In the 1990s, Adams became a global superstar with the release of "(Everything I Do) I Do It for You" in 1991. The song, from the album Waking Up the Neighbours, topped the charts in at least 19 countries and held the number one spot in the UK for 16 weeks straight. With over 15 million copies sold worldwide, it became one of the best-selling singles ever. Throughout the decade, Adams continued to succeed with ballads like "Please Forgive Me," "All for Love," and "Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman?"
Outside his music career, Adams became a skilled photographer, broadening his artistic reach into visual arts. His work in human rights and peace activism is also notable. This broad approach in his career has made him one of Canada's well-known cultural figures. His record sales, estimated between 75 and 100 million worldwide, put him among the best-selling artists ever, and being the most played artist on Canadian radio in the 2010s shows his ongoing popularity at home.
Before Fame
Growing up in a military family, Adams moved a lot during his childhood, going to schools across Canada and abroad, including a stint in Vienna, Austria. This lifestyle introduced him to a wide range of musical influences and cultural perspectives that later shaped his songwriting. His early experiences in different educational systems and cultures made him adaptable and gave him a global outlook.
In the late 1970s, the Canadian music scene was growing, with government support for local artists and radio content rules favoring Canadian musicians. Adams entered this scene as a young songwriter and performer, initially finding it hard to settle on his unique sound. Teaming up with songwriter Jim Vallance was crucial in developing the melodic rock style that became key to his early success, leading to his first recording contract and debut album in 1980.
