Casemiro
Brazilian defensive midfielder who won five Champions League titles with Real Madrid and currently plays for Manchester United.
Biography
Carlos Henrique Casimiro, better known as Casemiro, was born on 23 February 1992 in São José dos Campos, Brazil. As a Brazilian defensive midfielder, he became one of football's top players, especially during his key years at Real Madrid. He was central to one of the most successful teams in Champions League history. Casemiro's rise from the youth teams at São Paulo to the heights of European football shows how modern defensive midfield roles have evolved.
Casemiro started his professional career at São Paulo, advancing through their youth system before making his impact in the senior team. While playing for the Brazilian club, he scored 11 goals in 111 games, showing the attacking skills that complemented his defensive abilities. His standout performances caught the eye of Real Madrid scouts, leading to a loan move to the Spanish club in January 2013. Initially, he was assigned to Real Madrid Castilla, the reserve team, and played 15 games during his loan. Real Madrid then signed him permanently for £5.1 million.
The first years at Real Madrid were tough for Casemiro as he struggled to find regular first-team opportunities. To get more playing time, Real Madrid loaned him to Porto for €15 million. This move worked in his favor, as Casemiro thrived in Portuguese football, helping Porto reach the Champions League quarterfinals and making a name for himself in European games. His strong performances led Real Madrid to bring him back for €7 million in the summer of 2015.
Once back at Real Madrid, Casemiro became vital to the team's success. He was part of a powerful midfield trio, playing a key role in the club's incredible achievement of winning five UEFA Champions League titles. During his time at Madrid, he also won three La Liga titles, three Supercopa de España, three FIFA Club World Cups, three UEFA Super Cups, and one Copa del Rey. In August 2022, Casemiro moved to Manchester United for a reported fee of €70.65 million. He kept up his winning streak by securing the EFL Cup in his first season and the FA Cup in his second. His international career is just as impressive, as he has represented Brazil since 2011, playing in major tournaments like two FIFA World Cups and four Copa América competitions, winning the 2019 Copa América and finishing second in 2021.
Before Fame
Growing up in São José dos Campos, a city in the state of São Paulo known for its aerospace industry, Casemiro honed his football skills in the youth academies of local clubs before joining São Paulo’s famous youth system. The early 2000s were a golden age for Brazilian football development, with clubs investing heavily in youth facilities following the success of players like Ronaldinho and Kaká on the world stage.
Casemiro's rise to fame showed how Brazilian football exports changed during the 2010s, when European clubs started looking for defensive specialists instead of just attacking players. His growth matched a tactical shift in world football towards more structured defensive midfield roles, which made him a perfect fit for the modern game's needs when Real Madrid first noticed his potential after his standout performances with São Paulo.
