Biography

Lee Chong Wei, born on 21 October 1982 in Bagan Serai, Malaysia, is considered one of badminton's greatest players and Malaysia's most successful shuttler. During his career, he dominated men's singles, holding the world number one spot for a total of 349 weeks, which included an impressive 199-week run from August 2008 to June 2012. He is the only Malaysian player to keep the top ranking for more than a year, and the fifth Malaysian to reach number one since official rankings started in the 1980s.

Lee's Olympic success is a big part of his legacy. He was the first Malaysian to reach the men's singles final at the Olympics, winning silver at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, which earned him national hero status and the honorary title of Datuk from the Malaysian government. He continued to excel by winning silver medals at both the 2012 London Olympics and the 2016 Rio Olympics, making him the most successful Malaysian Olympian ever with three Olympic medals. These back-to-back achievements highlight his long-lasting excellence in badminton.

Aside from his Olympic achievements, Lee won many prestigious titles, including national, Asian championships, and Commonwealth Games gold medals. He was honored several times in Malaysia, receiving awards like the Anugerah Sukan Negara for Sportsman of the Year in 2004 and Olympian of the Year in 2008. The Malaysian government also recognized his contributions with high honors like the Order of Merit of Malaysia, Commander of Order of Meritorious Service, and Order of the Defender of the Realm.

Lee's career ended in 2019 when he retired after being diagnosed with nose cancer, stopping him from competing at full strength. Despite this challenge, his impact on badminton was celebrated in 2023 when he was inducted into the BWF Badminton Hall of Fame. He married fellow badminton player Wong Mew Choo, and after retiring, he was chosen as Malaysia's chef de mission for the 2020 Summer Olympics, though he participated virtually due to his health.

Before Fame

Growing up in Bagan Serai, a small town in Perak, Lee Chong Wei started playing badminton at a young age. This was a time when Malaysian badminton was making a comeback in international competition. His early development matched Malaysia's efforts to rebuild its badminton program after the successes of the 1990s, with players like Rashid Sidek and Wong Choong Hann achieving world rankings.

Lee became well-known through Malaysia's national development system, where his exceptional talent was spotted and developed through structured training programs. His rise happened in the early 2000s, as badminton was becoming more global and competitive. New training methods and international exposure were key to succeeding at the highest levels of the sport.
