Biography
Tessa Charlotte Rampling was born on February 5, 1946, in Sturmer, England. She attended St. Hilda's School in Bushey before starting her modeling career during the Swinging Sixties—a time when London became a hub for fashion, music, and youth culture. Her striking appearance and unique screen presence quickly caught filmmakers' attention. She had early film roles in the mid-1960s, including a part as Meredith in the 1966 film "Georgy Girl," which starred Lynn Redgrave.
Rampling's career shifted towards European arthouse cinema, making her a prominent figure in the late 1960s and 1970s. She appeared in Luchino Visconti's "The Damned" in 1969, where she gained a reputation for taking on complex and morally challenging roles. This was further proven in Liliana Cavani's controversial film "The Night Porter" in 1974, which sparked significant debate but confirmed her as a daring performer of her generation. She continued to work in both European and English-language films, appearing in Woody Allen's "Stardust Memories" in 1980, Sidney Lumet's "The Verdict" in 1982, and Iain Softley's "The Wings of the Dove" in 1997.
In the 2000s, Rampling developed a close working relationship with French director François Ozon, appearing in "Under the Sand" in 2000, "Swimming Pool" in 2003, and "Young and Beautiful" in 2013. Her role in "45 Years" in 2015, directed by Andrew Haigh, brought her the most recognition of her career, earning her the Silver Bear for Best Actress at the Berlin International Film Festival, the European Film Award for Best Actress, and an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress. In that same year, she received the European Film Academy Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2017, she was awarded the Volpi Cup for Best Actress at the Venice International Film Festival for her role in "Hannah."
Outside of film, Rampling has been involved in television and music. She attracted new fans with her role as Dr. Evelyn Vogel in the TV series "Dexter" in 2013, and she received a Primetime Emmy Award nomination and a Screen Actors Guild Award nomination for her performance in the 2012 miniseries "Restless." In 2002, she released an album of cabaret-style recordings titled "Like a Woman." She has been married twice, first to Bryan Southcombe and then to French musician Jean-Michel Jarre. In 2015, she published her autobiography, originally written in French as "Qui Je Suis," with the English translation "Who I Am" released in 2017.
Before Fame
Charlotte Rampling grew up in postwar Britain and went to St. Hilda's School in Bushey. She started her public life through modeling around the early to mid-1960s when London was becoming a global center for fashion and youth culture. Her distinct features and confident style were perfect for the look of the time, and modeling gave her the exposure that led to opportunities in the film industry.
Her switch from modeling to acting was typical of the time, with fashion, film, and popular culture closely connected. Small film roles in the mid-1960s helped her hone her skills, and her choice to take on bold and challenging roles made her stand out from others who chose more mainstream paths. By the end of the decade, she was firmly established in serious European cinema.
