Biography

Ernesto 'Che' Guevara de la Serna (1928-1967) was an Argentine Marxist revolutionary and guerrilla leader who became a key figure in the Cuban Revolution. Born in Rosario, Argentina, Guevara studied medicine at the University of Buenos Aires and developed his political views during his travels across Latin America, where he saw poverty and social inequality. Witnessing the CIA-backed overthrow of Guatemala's elected government under Jacobo Árbenz in 1954 solidified his anti-imperialist beliefs and dedication to revolutionary change.

In Mexico City in 1955, Guevara met Fidel and Raúl Castro and joined their 26th of July Movement. He traveled to Cuba aboard the yacht Granma in 1956 as part of an expedition to overthrow the US-backed dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista. During the two-year guerrilla campaign, Guevara showed himself to be both a capable military commander and an ideological leader, becoming second-in-command of the revolutionary forces. His tactical ideas and strong dedication earned him respect among the fighters and established his reputation as a skilled guerrilla warfare strategist.

After the Cuban Revolution's success in 1959, Guevara held several high-ranking positions in the new government. He was president of the National Bank, minister of industries, and helped implement agrarian land reform and Cuba's literacy campaign. As a diplomat, he traveled widely to promote Cuban socialism and Third World solidarity. His role in bringing Soviet nuclear missiles to Cuba contributed to the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962.

Guevara was also a prolific writer and theorist, authoring significant works like 'Guerrilla Warfare' and 'The Bolivian Diary.' His writings on revolutionary strategy and his experiences became important texts for liberation movements around the world. In 1965, he left Cuba to spark revolutions elsewhere, first in the Congo and then in Bolivia. His Bolivian campaign failed when he was captured and executed by Bolivian forces with CIA support in the village of La Higuera on October 9, 1967. His death turned him into a symbol for revolutionary causes, and his image became an enduring sign of rebellion against oppression.

Before Fame

Guevara was born into a middle-class family in Rosario and, despite severe asthma in his childhood, did well in academics and sports. As a medical student at the University of Buenos Aires, he took motorcycle trips across South America that deeply changed his outlook. These journeys showed him the harsh realities of poverty, disease, and social injustice in the area, changing him from a privileged student to a committed revolutionary.

In the early 1950s, Latin America saw rising tensions between nationalist movements seeking social reform and US-backed conservative governments protecting foreign economic interests. Seeing the 1954 CIA-led coup against Guatemala's progressive government under Jacobo Árbenz pushed Guevara's political beliefs further left, convincing him that peaceful reform was impossible against US imperialism.
