Biography

Olaf Scholz, born on June 14, 1958, is a German politician who was Chancellor of Germany from 2021 to 2025. He is a member of the Social Democratic Party (SPD) and was the country's ninth Chancellor, leading the 'traffic light coalition' with the Green Party and Free Democratic Party. Born in Osnabrück, Lower Saxony, Scholz studied law at the University of Hamburg and started his career as a labor law attorney before moving into politics in the 1970s.

Scholz's political journey at the federal level began when he was elected to the Bundestag in 1998 and served until 2011. He advanced quickly in the SPD, becoming the party's general secretary in 2002 under Chancellor Gerhard Schröder. His first cabinet role was in 2007 as Federal Minister of Labour and Social Affairs in Angela Merkel's first grand coalition government. After the SPD lost the election in 2009, Scholz shifted to Hamburg politics, leading the party to victory in the 2011 state election, and served as First Mayor of Hamburg until 2018.

In 2018, Scholz returned to federal politics as the SPD joined Merkel's fourth cabinet. He became Vice Chancellor and Federal Minister of Finance, roles that boosted his national presence and positioned him as a potential successor to Merkel. As Finance Minister, he managed Germany's economic reaction to the COVID-19 pandemic, applying substantial fiscal stimulus in a break from Germany's usually conservative fiscal policies.

As Chancellor, Scholz dealt with immediate issues like the pandemic and Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. His government responded to the Ukraine situation by significantly changing German defense policy, increasing military spending, and providing weapons to Ukraine, moving away from Germany's long-standing foreign policy restraint. His management of these crises gained him international acclaim, including being on Time magazine's list of the 100 most influential people in both 2022 and 2023, and earning the Global Citizen Awards in 2023. Scholz is married to Britta Ernst, also an SPD politician, who has held various positions in state government.

Before Fame

Scholz grew up in post-war West Germany during a time of fast economic growth and growing democracy. He studied law at the University of Hamburg, focusing on labor and employment law, which later influenced his political work on workers' rights and social policy. He got into politics in the 1970s when he joined the SPD as a young lawyer, a period when the party was modernizing under leaders like Willy Brandt and Helmut Schmidt.

His rise was shaped by Germany's federal system, which allowed him to gain executive experience at both the city-state and federal levels. His background in labor law matched traditional SPD values, while his practical approach to governance helped him manage the complex coalition politics typical in German democracy in the early 21st century.
