Biography
Anderson Luís de Souza, better known as Deco, was born on August 27, 1977, in São Bernardo do Campo, Brazil. A talented midfielder skilled in both attacking and central roles, Deco became one of his generation's most awarded players, gaining international fame for playing for Portugal at top club and international levels. He is now the sporting director for FC Barcelona, where he spent some of his best years as a player.
Deco started his professional career in Brazil before moving to Europe, where he truly showcased his talent. At FC Porto, under manager José Mourinho, he became a key player during one of the club's most successful times. In Porto's 2003–04 UEFA Champions League-winning run, Deco was named UEFA Club Footballer of the Year and UEFA Best Midfielder. He also earned the Man of the Match title in the 2004 Champions League Final, securing his place as one of Europe's top midfielders.
After his success at Porto, Deco joined FC Barcelona and continued to excel. He won the UEFA Champions League with Barcelona in 2006, becoming one of the few players to win the trophy with two different clubs. He was also the first to win the UEFA Best Midfielder Award with two clubs. At the 2006 FIFA Club World Cup, Deco received the Golden Ball and Man of the Match award in the final, even though Barcelona lost to the Brazilian team Internacional.
Deco gained Portuguese citizenship in 2002 after five years living in Portugal, allowing him to play for the Portugal national team. He earned 75 caps, playing in two UEFA European Championships and two FIFA World Cups. He reached the final of UEFA Euro 2004, where Portugal lost to Greece, and helped the team achieve a fourth-place finish at the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany. His contributions were honored when he was named an Officer of the Order of Prince Henry.
After leaving Barcelona, Deco joined Chelsea in the English Premier League, where he ended his playing career. He then returned to Barcelona in a football administration role and is now the sporting director, shaping the club's recruitment and football strategy.
Before Fame
Deco grew up in São Bernardo do Campo, a city near São Paulo, Brazil, at a time when Brazilian football was churning out highly skilled players who would become stars in European leagues. He honed his football skills in Brazil before moving to Europe, starting with smaller Portuguese clubs where his creativity and technical skills caught the eye.
His career really took off when he joined FC Porto. Under José Mourinho's guidance, Deco excelled in a system that let him control the game from midfield with his vision, ball control, and knack for scoring. His standout performances in the UEFA Cup and later the UEFA Champions League brought him to the attention of top European clubs and made him a central player in Porto's successful period in the early 2000s.
