Biography

Deng Xiaoping (1904–1997) was a key Chinese Communist leader who drastically changed China's economic and political path in the late 20th century. Born in Guang'an, Sichuan Province, he rose to lead the country after Mao Zedong's death in 1976, even though he never held the titles of party secretary or president. From 1978 to 1992, he moved China away from Maoist policies and towards practical economic modernization and some market reforms.

Deng studied politics in Moscow during the 1920s at the Communist University of the Toilers of the East and Moscow Sun Yat-sen University. After returning to China, he became an important figure in the Chinese Communist Party's rise to power, took part in the Long March, and held various military and administrative roles. Despite his early role, Deng was politically persecuted during the Cultural Revolution and was twice purged before regaining power.

As leader, Deng launched the "Four Modernizations" focusing on agriculture, industry, technology, and defense. He reformed the economy by dismantling the commune system, allowing private businesses, creating special economic zones, and inviting foreign investment. His approach, summed up by his saying "it doesn’t matter whether a cat is black or white, as long as it catches mice," spurred unprecedented economic growth and lifted millions out of poverty.

Deng's rule was not without problems. The 1989 Tiananmen Square protests were a major challenge to his authority, and his decision to use military force faced international backlash. Nonetheless, his economic policies continued, highlighted by his 1992 Southern Tour that reinforced China's market reform commitment. He was married three times: to Zhang Xiyuan, Jin Weiying, and lastly to Zhuo Lin, who outlived him. Deng passed away in Beijing in 1997, leaving behind a vastly changed China.

Before Fame

Deng Xiaoping started his journey to prominence as a young man when he went to France in 1920 through a work-study program. While working in factories there, he first encountered Communist ideas. This time in Europe was when he became politically aware and joined the Chinese Communist Youth League. After studying in Moscow in the mid-1920s, he went back to China to work as an underground organizer for the Communist Party.

Deng's rise within the party sped up during the Chinese Civil War and the early years of the People's Republic. He showed administrative skill in various regional roles and became known for his practical governance style. However, his moderate views sometimes clashed with Mao's more extreme policies, leading to his political downfall during the Cultural Revolution. He eventually made a comeback, becoming Mao's successor.
