Biography
Denys Anatoliiovych Shmyhal was born on October 15, 1975, in Lviv, Ukraine, when it was part of the Soviet Union. He studied at Lviv Polytechnic National University, focusing on engineering and economics, which later shaped his career in business and public administration. Before joining the government, Shmyhal gained experience in the private sector and energy management, establishing himself as a knowledgeable figure in economic and infrastructure matters.
Shmyhal began his public service career as governor of Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast, a role he held from 2019 to 2020. His leadership there showed his administrative skills and brought him national recognition. He briefly served as acting deputy prime minister under Oleksiy Honcharuk before being appointed Prime Minister of Ukraine on March 4, 2020, by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, becoming the 18th person in independent Ukraine to hold that office.
As prime minister, Shmyhal quickly faced the challenge of handling Ukraine's response to the COVID-19 pandemic, managing public health alongside economic stabilization. His role became significant following Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022. He played a key role in organizing the country's wartime economic management, coordinating international financial aid, overseeing reconstruction planning, and ensuring government stability during active military conflict. Shmyhal served as prime minister for over five years, the longest in Ukrainian history. On July 14, 2025, President Zelenskyy announced a government reshuffle and nominated Yulia Svyrydenko as his replacement. Shmyhal resigned the next day. After Svyrydenko became prime minister, he was appointed Minister of Defense of Ukraine, a position he held from 2025 to 2026. As of January 14, 2026, he has been serving as First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy of Ukraine.
In recognition of his contributions to Ukrainian-Lithuanian relations and European cooperation during the war, Shmyhal received the Commander of the Order of the Lithuanian Grand Duke Gediminas in 2023, one of Lithuania's highest awards for foreign nationals.
