Sali Berisha, born on October 15, 1944, in Viçidol, Albania, became a key player in post-communist Albanian politics. After studying medicine at the University of Tirana, he became a cardiologist and surgeon before moving into politics during Albania's democratic shift in the early 1990s. His medical background gave him a methodical approach to his later political career.
Berisha's political journey took off with the founding of the Democratic Party of Albania in 1990, where he led the charge against the communist regime. In 1992, he was elected President of Albania, serving until 1997 during a notably turbulent time in the country's recent past.
