Biography
Alán Alejandro Maldonado Tamez, known as Dharius and previously as MC Dharius, was born in 1984 in Monterrey, Nuevo León, Mexico. He is a rapper, singer, songwriter, and actor who has become a leading figure in Mexican hip-hop over more than 20 years. His work includes several albums, collaborations, and acting roles, earning him a loyal fan base in Mexico and Latin America.
Dharius gained major attention as part of Cartel de Santa, a key hip-hop group in Mexican music. He was with them from 1999 to 2013, during which time Cartel de Santa helped shape and boost Spanish-language hip-hop in Mexico. His last work with the group was the song and video 'Me Alegro de Su Odio,' which closed an important chapter in his early career.
After leaving Cartel de Santa in 2013, Dharius started a solo career, widening his musical scope and public presence. He released several albums and singles independently, working with many Latin American artists and establishing himself as a versatile performer in hip-hop and urban music. His solo work kept the raw, street-style lyrics from his past while also exploring new musical directions.
Besides music, Dharius has ventured into acting, appearing in films and TV shows, which helped him reach audiences beyond hip-hop fans. Balancing both as a recording artist and actor, he's become one of the most versatile entertainers in the Mexican urban music scene. His ability to stay relevant in both fields highlights his adaptability and dedication over the years.
As of the mid-2020s, Dharius is still active in the music industry, releasing new material and connecting with fans through live performances and online platforms. His journey, from a young member of a pioneering hip-hop group in Monterrey to a seasoned solo artist and actor, mirrors the growth and development of the Mexican hip-hop genre.
Before Fame
Dharius grew up in Monterrey, Nuevo León, a northern Mexican industrial city that became one of the country's most active hip-hop centers during the 1990s. Being close to the US border, American rap music was very influential there, shaping a generation of young artists who started adapting the genre to their own social realities and into Spanish.
Around the age of fifteen, Dharius joined Cartel de Santa in 1999. Entering the hip-hop scene at this young age meant his early years as an artist were entirely shaped within the group. This gave him the experience and exposure that would later help his transition to a solo career. The raw street stories and bold lyrical style he developed during this time became the core of his artistic identity.
