Biography

Hendrikus Wilhelmus Maria Schoof, or Dick Schoof, was born on 8 March 1957 in Santpoort, Netherlands. He went to Radboud University and spent most of his career in the Dutch civil service, gaining extensive experience in public order, national security, and justice administration before moving into politics.

Schoof held various senior administrative roles for several decades. From 2003 to 2010, he was the director-general for public order and safety at the Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations, managing national policies for policing and civil security. He then joined the Ministry of Justice and Security as director-general from 2010 to 2013. From 2013 to 2018, he served as the National Coordinator for Security and Counterterrorism, one of the key positions in Dutch national security. Between 2018 and 2020, he led the General Intelligence and Security Service (AIVD) as its director-general, and from 2020 to 2024, he was the secretary-general of the Ministry of Justice and Security, the top civil service role in that department.

In July 2024, Schoof became the Prime Minister of the Netherlands, heading a coalition government made up of the Party for Freedom (PVV), the People's Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD), the New Social Contract (NSC), and the Farmer-Citizen Movement (BBB). Schoof, who wasn't affiliated with any party, acted as an independent figure who could unite this coalition, which was seen as the most right-leaning in recent Dutch history. His appointment was partly due to the coalition partners not being able to agree on a candidate from within their own parties.

The Schoof cabinet experienced significant internal conflicts from the start. The coalition fell apart in June 2025, but Schoof stayed on as a caretaker prime minister, handling daily government tasks without launching major new policies. He continued in this role until February 2026, when a new government took over. During his time in office, Schoof was honored for his diplomatic efforts with the Order of Prince Yaroslav the Wise, 1st class, from Ukraine in 2025, and the Grand Cross of the Order of the White Rose of Finland, also in 2025.

Before Fame

Dick Schoof was born in 1957 in Santpoort, a village in North Holland, during a time of postwar rebuilding in the Netherlands. He attended Radboud University in Nijmegen, known for its focus on law, public administration, and social sciences, which set the stage for his government career.

Instead of diving straight into politics, Schoof built his reputation through a long career in the Dutch civil service. His work focused on security, counterterrorism, and public order, which became the hallmark of his career. By the time he gained national attention, he had already spent over 20 years in important but low-profile roles, a path quite different from most Dutch prime ministers who typically advanced through party ranks.
