Biography
Haris Medunjanin is a Bosnian former professional footballer born on 8 March 1985 in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. He played as a central midfielder throughout his career and is now the assistant manager of Dutch club NEC Nijmegen in the Eredivisie. Best known for his technical skills and passing, Medunjanin earned a name as a talented playmaker during his playing days.
Medunjanin started his professional career at Dutch club AZ and was loaned to Sparta Rotterdam in 2006. His career took him to various leagues and countries, showing how adaptable he was. In 2008, he moved to Real Valladolid in Spain's La Liga, gaining valuable experience in one of Europe’s top divisions. Two years later, he joined Israeli club Maccabi Tel Aviv, starting a long association with the club over his career.
In 2012, Medunjanin was loaned to Turkish club Gaziantepspor and later signed with them permanently the next season. After spending a few years in Turkey, he returned to Maccabi Tel Aviv in 2016 before making a big move to Major League Soccer in 2017 with the Philadelphia Union. He became a key figure in the Union’s midfield during his time there.
Internationally, Medunjanin's career path showed the complexities of football eligibility today. He initially played for the Netherlands at the under-21 level but chose in 2009 to switch to representing Bosnia and Herzegovina for senior international football. This switch was significant as he went on to earn over 50 caps for his birth country. His international career peaked when he was part of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s squad for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, their first-ever World Cup appearance. He ended his international career in 2018, having been a national team regular for nearly a decade.
Before Fame
Medunjanin was born in Sarajevo when Bosnia and Herzegovina was still part of Yugoslavia. His early years coincided with the breakup of Yugoslavia and the Bosnian War, which forced many families to flee. Like many Bosnian families at that time, his family moved to the Netherlands, where he began his journey in football.
Growing up in the Netherlands, Medunjanin developed through youth football systems and eventually caught the eye of AZ Alkmaar, one of the country's well-known clubs. His time in Dutch football academies gave him the technical skills that defined his playing style throughout his career. The Dutch focus on skill and tactical awareness shaped how he approached the game, especially his ability to control the tempo and distribute the ball effectively from central midfield.
