Biography
Diego Dionisio Luna Alexander was born on December 29, 1979, in Toluca de Lerdo, Mexico. He started his entertainment career in Mexican telenovelas when he was young, gaining early experience in television that would later shape his filmmaking approach. Luna studied at Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana, where he learned more about media and performance arts. His big break came with the 2001 film Y tu mamá también, directed by Alfonso Cuarón, establishing him as a major talent in Latin American cinema and opening doors internationally.
In the 2000s, Luna successfully moved between Mexican and Hollywood productions, appearing in well-known films like Frida, Open Range, Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights, The Terminal, and Milk. His ability to work across different cultural contexts and languages made him a desirable choice for roles requiring authentic Latino representation. During this time, he often collaborated with fellow Mexican actor Gael García Bernal, creating a partnership that also led to production work. Their projects helped boost a new generation of Mexican talent in international cinema.
In the 2010s, Luna began directing and producing, working on films like Abel, Cesar Chavez, and Mr. Pig. His directing often highlighted social issues and Latino stories, showing his dedication to meaningful storytelling. He also continued acting in major projects like Elysium and the animated film The Book of Life. In 2016, he played Cassian Andor in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, a role that later led to his own Disney+ series Andor, earning him two Golden Globe nominations for Best Actor in a Television Drama Series.
Beyond film and TV, Luna has created and directed various documentaries and talk shows, like the Fusion TV series Back Home and the Amazon Studios production Pan y Circo. His work often covers themes of immigration, identity, and social justice, especially related to Mexican and Latino communities. From 2018 to 2020, he played drug trafficker Miguel Ángel Félix Gallardo in Netflix's Narcos: Mexico, showing his range in complex roles. Luna was married to actress Camila Sodi, and his contributions to entertainment and social advocacy put him on Time magazine's 100 Most Influential People list in 2025.
