Biography

Diego Rodríguez de Silva y Velázquez, baptised on June 6, 1599, in Seville, Spain, and passing on August 6, 1660, in Madrid, is considered one of the greatest painters in Western art history. A key figure of the Spanish Baroque period, he was the leading artist at the court of King Philip IV of Spain and Portugal. This role gave him unique access to royal subjects, important commissions, and international connections that influenced his entire career. His work includes portraits, mythological scenes, religious subjects, and historical events, all created with technical skill and deep psychological insight that made him stand out from his peers.

Before Fame

Velázquez was born in Seville in 1599, which was one of the largest and wealthiest cities in Europe at the time, because it was the gateway to Spain's American colonies. He showed early talent for art and began his apprenticeship around 1611 with Francisco Pacheco, a respected painter, scholar, and figure in Seville's intellectual community. Pacheco's studio attracted humanists, poets, and artists, exposing the young Velázquez not only to painting techniques but also to a wide cultural education that would shape the depth and ambition of his later work. He completed his apprenticeship and became a master painter in 1617, marrying his teacher's daughter Juana Pacheco the following year.
