Biography

Rodrigo Paz Pereira was born on September 22, 1967, in Santiago de Compostela, Spain, and comes from one of Bolivia's well-known political families. As the eldest son of former president Jaime Paz Zamora and great-nephew of president Víctor Paz Estenssoro, he grew up with a strong political background. He studied at American University in Washington, D.C., and then moved into Bolivian politics with diplomatic roles during Hugo Banzer's government, gaining a reputation as a skilled administrator with international experience.

Paz started his electoral journey in 2002 when he was elected to the Chamber of Deputies, representing his father’s Revolutionary Left Movement (MIR). He served until 2010, making his mark during a time of big changes under Evo Morales' presidency. After MIR dissolved, Paz shifted to local politics in Tarija, a family political base, serving as President of the Municipal Council from 2010 to 2015 and then as Mayor from 2015 to 2020.

In 2020, he moved to the Senate, winning a seat for Tarija with the Civic Community party. This role set him up for his biggest political challenge: the 2025 presidential campaign. Running for the Christian Democratic Party with Edmand Lara as his running mate, Paz was initially behind in polls to businessman Samuel Doria Medina and former president Jorge Quiroga. However, he surprisingly topped the first round, ending MAS's 20-year rule in Bolivian politics.

Paz's win in the runoff against Quiroga was a milestone in Bolivian democracy, marking the first use of a second-round in presidential elections. His political stance is centrist and populist, favoring closer ties with the United States, economic aid, and reducing government spending, though not as drastically as opponents claimed. When he became Bolivia's 68th president in 2025, he got support vows from Quiroga's Libre coalition, suggesting possible cooperation in his government.

Before Fame

Growing up in Bolivia's political elite, Paz Pereira was familiar with governance and diplomacy early on, thanks to his father Jaime Paz Zamora's presidency and his great-uncle Víctor Paz Estenssoro's role in politics. Born in Spain, his family's international ties were evident, and his education at American University in Washington, D.C., gave him a worldwide view that would be useful in his diplomatic work.

His rise was helped by the political instability in Bolivia and the shifts in its democratic processes. In the late 20th and early 21st centuries, Bolivia saw major political turmoil, giving established political families chances to stay influential by adapting. Joining Hugo Banzer's government in diplomatic roles, Paz built his own reputation while keeping ties with traditional political circles.
