Biography
Dmitry Anatolyevich Medvedev was born on September 14, 1965, in Saint Petersburg, Russia. He studied law at Saint Petersburg State University, where he later worked as a lecturer and researcher. His connection with Vladimir Putin, who also had ties to the university, played a significant role in his political career. Medvedev entered the St. Petersburg city government in the early 1990s under Mayor Anatoly Sobchak, working alongside Putin, and climbed the administrative ranks as Putin's political power grew nationally.
Medvedev was President of Russia from 2008 to 2012, winning the 2008 presidential election. Many saw him as more liberal than Putin, and his presidency focused on modernizing Russia's economy to reduce its reliance on oil and gas. During his term, Medvedev and U.S. President Barack Obama signed the New START treaty, a major nuclear arms reduction agreement that marked improved relations between Washington and Moscow, often called the 'reset.' His presidency also saw the Russo-Georgian War of 2008 and Russia's recovery from the global financial crisis.
Despite launching an anti-corruption campaign, Medvedev was later accused of corruption himself, with opposition leader Alexei Navalny releasing a documentary in 2017 alleging that Medvedev acquired significant undisclosed personal wealth. Medvedev served one term as president and was succeeded by Putin in the 2012 presidential election, after which Putin appointed him Prime Minister. He held the position until January 2020 when he and the entire cabinet resigned to allow Putin to make major constitutional changes. Mikhail Mishustin replaced him as Prime Minister on January 16, 2020.
After his resignation as Prime Minister, Putin appointed Medvedev as Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of Russia, a position he still holds. In this role, Medvedev has become known for more aggressive and anti-Western statements, especially regarding the Russian invasion of Ukraine beginning in 2022. This change in tone surprised many who previously saw him as more moderate, with many interpreting it as an effort to show strong support for Putin's political stance.
Medvedev is married to Svetlana Medvedeva and has received various state honors, including the Order of Glory (2011), the Order for Merit to the Fatherland, 1st class (2015), the Order of the Liberator (2008), and the Order Danaker (2015), among others. He holds degrees from Saint Petersburg State University and was awarded the Prize of the Government of the Russian Federation in education (2001). Some analysts consider him a potential successor to Vladimir Putin, though his political independence and real decision-making power continue to be debated.
Before Fame
Dmitry Medvedev grew up in Leningrad, now known as Saint Petersburg, during the last years of the Soviet Union. He studied law at the Faculty of Law of Saint Petersburg State University, graduating and then working there as a civil law lecturer in the late 1980s and early 1990s. This time was marked by the dramatic fall of the Soviet system and the chaotic rise of post-Soviet Russia, shaping a whole generation of Russian administrators and politicians.
His rise to national fame was closely tied to his connection with Vladimir Putin in St. Petersburg's city government in the early 1990s. Working under Mayor Anatoly Sobchak, Medvedev and Putin formed a professional relationship that greatly influenced his career. When Putin gained national attention under President Boris Yeltsin, Medvedev followed, eventually becoming the head of Putin's presidential administration in 2003 and a first deputy prime minister in 2005, making him one of the most prominent figures in Russian government well before he became a presidential candidate himself.
