Biography
Dua Lipa was born on August 22, 1995, in Westminster, London, to Albanian parents who had moved from Kosovo. She spent her childhood split between London and Pristina, Kosovo, which shaped her identity and music. She attended Fitzjohn's Primary School and Sylvia Young Theatre School in London before her family moved to Kosovo, where she went to Mileniumi i Tretë School. She returned to London and finished her secondary education at Parliament Hill School. Before launching her music career, she worked as a model, honing her visual style and public image.
Lipa signed with Warner Bros. Records in 2014 and released her first album in 2017, which reached number three on the UK Albums Chart. The album included hits like 'New Rules', which topped the UK charts and gained worldwide fame. Her popularity soared in 2018 when she won Brit Awards for British Female Solo Artist and British Breakthrough Act. That year, her song 'One Kiss' with Calvin Harris became the UK's best-selling single, winning the Brit Award for British Single of the Year the next year. At the 2019 Grammy Awards, she was named Best New Artist and also won Best Dance/Electronic Recording for 'Electricity', a collaboration with Silk City.
Her second album, Future Nostalgia, came out in 2020 and was a big artistic and commercial success. Mixing disco, funk, and synth-pop, it debuted at number one in the UK and reached the top three in the US. The hit single 'Don't Start Now' set a record for the longest time in the UK Singles Chart top ten for a British female artist and was in the top five of the US Billboard Hot 100 year-end chart for 2020. 'Levitating' later topped the Billboard year-end Hot 100 chart for 2021 and received a Diamond certification from the RIAA. Future Nostalgia won the Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Album and the Brit Award for British Album of the Year.
Outside of music, Lipa has ventured into film, fashion, modeling, and podcasting. She made her acting debut in the 2023 Barbie movie and released the single 'Dance the Night' for it, which became her fourth UK number-one hit. Her third album, Radical Optimism, came out in 2024, debuting at number one on the UK Albums Chart. It featured top-ten singles like 'Houdini', 'Training Season', and 'Illusion'. She also started a podcast and pursued various fashion and production projects, becoming a multi-talented creative figure. She is married to actor Callum Turner. She has been named an Honorary Ambassador of Kosovo for her global influence and support for Kosovo.
Before Fame
Dua Lipa grew up in both London and Pristina, Kosovo, learning to navigate two cultures and languages from a young age. Her dad, Dukagjin Lipa, is a well-known rock musician from Kosovo, and growing up in a musical household helped shape her artistic goals. She went to the Sylvia Young Theatre School in London, famous for training young performers, before her family moved back to Kosovo during her teenage years.
At around fifteen, she returned to London to pursue her career on her own. She balanced school at Parliament Hill School with modeling work and early efforts to break into the music industry. After several years of writing songs and building her profile, she signed with Warner Bros. Records in 2014, a deal that led to her debut album and eventual mainstream success.
