He immigrated to the United States where he pursued his education, attending Albany High School before continuing to the University of California, Santa Barbara, and later the prestigious New York University Tisch School of the Arts to study acting. His formal training at Tisch provided him with the foundation for what would become a successful career spanning film, television, and stage productions.

Gathegi's breakthrough came in 2007 when he was cast as Dr. Jeffrey "Big Love" Cole in the fourth season of the medical drama House. That same year, he appeared in the critically acclaimed crime drama Gone Baby Gone, directed by Ben Affleck, playing the character Cheese. These early roles demonstrated his range and ability to handle both television series work and feature films.

The actor gained widespread recognition through his portrayal of Laurent, a vampire character in the Twilight film series. He appeared in both Twilight (2008) and The Twilight Saga: New Moon (2009), introducing him to a global audience through one of the most successful film franchises of the era. Following this success, Gathegi continued to build his career with notable roles in major productions, including Darwin in X-Men: First Class (2011), showcasing his ability to work within the superhero genre.

Gathegi's television career expanded significantly with his recurring role as Matias Solomon on The Blacklist, a character he later reprised in the spinoff series The Blacklist: Redemption. His career reached new heights when he joined the cast of Apple TV+'s For All Mankind in 2022, playing engineer and entrepreneur Dev Ayesa in the acclaimed alternate history space drama.

In addition to his television success, Gathegi has continued to work in major film productions. He was cast as Mister Terrific in the upcoming DC Universe film Superman, scheduled for release in 2025, marking his entry into the rebooted DC film universe. Throughout his career, Gathegi has demonstrated versatility across genres, from medical dramas to science fiction, supernatural thrillers to action films, establishing himself as a reliable character actor capable of both supporting and leading roles.
