Biography

Uhuru Mũigai Kenyatta was born on October 26, 1961, in Nairobi, Kenya. He is the son of Jomo Kenyatta, Kenya's first president and a leader in the fight for independence. Uhuru went to St. Mary's School for his early education and later studied at Amherst College in Massachusetts, USA. Growing up, he witnessed the early challenges Kenya faced after gaining independence.

Kenyatta entered politics in the early 2000s when President Daniel Arap Moi picked him as his preferred successor to lead the ruling Kenya African National Union (KANU). Despite this support, Kenyatta lost the 2002 presidential election to Mwai Kibaki, ending KANU's 40-year rule. After the defeat, he served as a Member of Parliament for Gatundu South from 2002 to 2013 and was the leader of the official opposition from 2003 to 2007.

During the 2007 election crisis, Kenyatta helped form a coalition government and served as Deputy Prime Minister from 2008 to 2013 under Prime Minister Raila Odinga. This role helped stabilize Kenya after the violence that followed the disputed election. It also gave Kenyatta valuable government experience and helped him build alliances for his future presidential run.

In 2013, Kenyatta was elected president on his second try, becoming Kenya's fourth president. He left KANU in 2012 to join The National Alliance (TNA). He teamed up with William Ruto's United Republican Party (URP), eventually merging them to create the Jubilee Party. His presidency focused on infrastructure projects like the Standard Gauge Railway between Nairobi and Mombasa, increased road networks, and energy developments. He was re-elected in 2017, although the election was initially annulled by the Supreme Court before being repeated in a controversial poll boycotted by the opposition.

Before Fame

Uhuru Kenyatta was born into Kenya's leading political family. His journey into politics was influenced by his father's role as the country's founding president. Growing up during Kenya's early years of independence, he saw the challenges of running a new African nation. His education at Amherst College in the United States gave him a global view that would later shape his political style.

Before he began his political career, Kenyatta worked in the private sector and explored various business opportunities. His political journey began when President Moi saw him as a potential successor, valuing both his family name and his ability to connect with younger Kenyans. Although he initially lost in elections, this experience established him as a key player in Kenyan politics and paved the way for his later presidency.
