Biography

Elijah J. McCoy was born on May 2, 1844, in Colchester, Ontario, Canada, to George and Mildred McCoy, who had escaped slavery in Kentucky through the Underground Railroad. He was born free by Lake Erie in Ontario, benefiting from the freedom offered in Canada to those escaping slavery in the American South. When he was about three, his family moved back to the United States, settling in Michigan. There, Elijah grew up and eventually established himself as an inventor and engineer.

Before Fame

McCoy grew up in Michigan when the country was deeply divided over slavery and racial equality. His parents had risked their lives to escape slavery, and their drive to pursue education and opportunities influenced Elijah's goals. In Scotland, he trained as a mechanical engineer, joining a select group of highly educated professionals. However, after the Civil War, racial discrimination in the United States meant that employers mostly overlooked his qualifications. He accepted the available work on the railroads, where he was finally able to apply his skills effectively.

  • Honored by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, which named its first regional office in Detroit after him in 2012
  • Pioneered engineering innovations that improved efficiency and reduced operational costs across railroad and maritime industries
