Bana began acting professionally in the early '90s on the sketch-comedy TV series Full Frontal, where he honed his comedic skills and gained recognition in Australia. His big break came with his role in the 1997 Australian comedy-drama film The Castle, which showed off his versatility as an actor.
Bana's career really took off with his impressive performance as Mark "Chopper" Read in the 2000 biographical crime film Chopper. This role highlighted his dramatic talent and earned him the AACTA Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role. The role required a significant physical transformation and marked his shift from comedy to serious drama, establishing him as one of Australia's top actors.
After his success in Australian films, Bana gained international attention with his role in Ridley Scott's war film Black Hawk Down (2001). This led to his casting as Bruce Banner in Ang Lee's superhero film Hulk (2003), which brought him worldwide fame. He then appeared in major Hollywood movies like Troy (2004) as the Trojan prince Hector, and Steven Spielberg's Munich (2005), where he played Avner Kaufman, a Mossad agent pursuing those responsible for the 1972 Munich Olympics massacre.
Throughout the 2000s and 2010s, Bana worked in a variety of genres, appearing in the Star Trek reboot (2009) as the villain Nero, the military drama Lone Survivor (2013), and the horror film Deliver Us from Evil (2014). He returned to Australian productions with the miniseries Dirty John (2018) and the well-received film The Dry (2020). Besides acting, Bana is a keen motor-racing enthusiast and has participated in various races throughout Australia. Before Fame
Before becoming famous, Eric Bana grew up in Melbourne's western suburbs in a working-class Croatian-Australian family. He started out working as a barman while doing stand-up comedy at local spots in the late 1980s and early 1990s. His talent for comedy and impressions eventually got him a spot on Full Frontal, a popular Australian sketch-comedy show that launched the careers of many Australian performers.
In the 1990s, the Australian entertainment industry was growing in both TV and film, with shows like Full Frontal giving new talent a chance to shine. Bana stood out on the show, which ran from 1993 to 1997, thanks to his knack for creating memorable characters and doing impressions.
