Biography

Juan Esteban Aristizábal Vásquez, known as Juanes, was born on August 9, 1972, in Medellín, Colombia. He is a Colombian musician, singer, guitarist, composer, and music arranger who ranks among the most successful Latin music artists ever. Juanes began his musical journey early, starting to play piano at just two years old. His early start in music laid the groundwork for an impressive career spanning over three decades.

In 1988, at 17, Juanes formed his first band, Ekhymosis, which launched him into the music industry. The rock band found success in Colombia, releasing eight albums over nine years. Their 1992 album Niño Gigante featured the popular song "Solo," which helped establish them in the Colombian rock scene. After Ekhymosis disbanded in 1997, Juanes pursued a solo career that skyrocketed him to international fame.

Juanes released his first solo album, Fíjate Bien, in 2000, earning critical acclaim and three Latin Grammy Awards. This success was followed by Un Día Normal in 2002, which went platinum across America. His third album, Mi Sangre, came out in 2004, became an international bestseller, and included the hit "La Camisa Negra," boosting him as a global Latin music star. The album's success opened doors to international markets and built his reputation beyond Spanish-speaking countries.

Throughout his career, Juanes has continued releasing successful albums, including La Vida... Es Un Ratico (2007), P.A.R.C.E. (2010), Loco de Amor (2015), Mis planes son amarte (2017), Más Futuro Que Pasado (2019), Origen (2021), and Vida Cotidiana (2023). His music style mixes rock with traditional Colombian sounds, creating a unique blend that appeals to many listeners. Beyond music, Juanes has devoted time to humanitarian work, especially through his NGO Fundacion Mi Sangre, which helps Colombian victims of anti-personnel mines. He studied at Pontifical Bolivarian University and is married to Karen Martínez. In 2013, he published his autobiography "Chasing The Sun," sharing his life story with narratives and photos.

Before Fame

Growing up in Medellín during the 1970s and 1980s, Juanes started learning music very early, taking piano lessons at just two years old. His musical education happened during a challenging time in Colombia, with the country facing violence and social unrest. Medellín, in particular, was deeply affected by drug cartel activities.

Ekhymosis was formed in 1988, during Colombia's rock movement of the late 1980s and early 1990s. This was a time when young musicians used rock music to express themselves and comment on social issues. The band's success in Colombia gave Juanes valuable experience in songwriting, performing, and understanding the music industry. These skills became crucial when he moved to his solo career after finishing his education at Pontifical Bolivarian University.
