Biography

Romano Prodi, born on August 9, 1939, in Scandiano, Italy, is an Italian economist and politician who became a key figure in European and Italian politics in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. Known as 'Il Professore' due to his academic background, Prodi had a notable career in academia, business, and politics. He studied at top universities, including the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart, the London School of Economics, and Harvard University, gaining a solid foundation in economics that guided his later work.

Prodi reached the peak of his political career serving twice as Prime Minister of Italy and once as President of the European Commission. His first term as Prime Minister lasted from 1996 to 1998 after leading The Olive Tree coalition to victory in the 1996 election, becoming the first left-leaning candidate to win an Italian general election since 1921. His term ended when he lost a vote of confidence in 1998, but he bounced back as President of the European Commission from 1999 to 2004.

After his time with the European Commission, Prodi returned to Italian politics, leading The Union coalition to win over Silvio Berlusconi's House of Freedoms in the 2006 election, starting his second term as Prime Minister. However, this term also ended early when he lost a vote of confidence in the Senate on January 24, 2008, leading him to resign to President Giorgio Napolitano. He continued handling routine business until early elections were held, marking the end of his direct leadership in Italian government.

Beyond his roles in government, Prodi stayed active in international affairs and academia. He worked as an economics professor and served as an international advisor to Goldman Sachs. In 2007, he became the founding president of Italy's Democratic Party. His international work extended when UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon appointed him as president of the African Union–United Nations peacekeeping panel in 2008. Since 2021, he has served as the UN Special Envoy for the Sahel, showing his continued commitment to global diplomatic and peacekeeping efforts. Throughout his career, Prodi has received numerous international honors, including the Knight Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic and the Grand Cross of the Legion of Honour.

Before Fame

Romano Prodi grew up in post-war Italy, a time of big economic and political changes. He was born in Scandiano, a small town in the Emilia-Romagna region, and pursued higher education during Italy's economic boom in the 1950s and 1960s. He studied at the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart and later at the London School of Economics and Harvard University, which shows how academic and economic ideas were becoming more global at the time.

Prodi first gained attention in academia, establishing himself as a respected economist and professor. His knowledge of economics was valuable as Italy moved from post-war rebuilding to becoming a key European economic power. With his strong academic background and practical economic skills, he became a sought-after leader as Italy faced challenges with European integration and political reform in the 1990s.
