Biography

Étienne François, duc de Choiseul (1719–1785) was a major French statesman during Louis XV's reign, serving as Foreign Minister first from 1758 to 1761 and then from 1766 to 1770. Born in Nancy to an old noble family, Choiseul rose through the military and diplomatic ranks to become a key player in French politics during a time of global conflict and colonial growth. While he was Foreign Minister, France was involved in the Seven Years' War, a conflict that changed European power and colonial territories.

Choiseul's diplomatic career took off when he became ambassador to Rome in 1753, where he skillfully handled complex church and political issues. His success there led to his role as ambassador to Vienna in 1757, where he worked to strengthen the Franco-Austrian alliance made in the Treaty of Versailles. These achievements got the attention of Madame de Pompadour, Louis XV's powerful mistress, who helped him become Foreign Minister in 1758.

As Foreign Minister, Choiseul managed France's military and diplomatic plans during the later stages of the Seven Years' War. Despite his efforts, France faced major defeats, losing most of its North American colonies, including Canada and Louisiana east of the Mississippi River, to Britain in the Treaty of Paris in 1763. However, Choiseul quickly started rebuilding France's military strength, making significant reforms to the navy and army. He also negotiated buying Corsica from Genoa in 1768, adding this important island in the Mediterranean to French lands.

Apart from his political career, Choiseul was a well-known art collector and supporter of the arts. He put together a significant private art collection, featured in several published catalogs like 'Cabinet de Monseigneur le duc de Choiseul' and 'Catalogue des tableaux qui composent le cabinet de Monseigneur le Duc de Choiseul.' His collection included works by major European artists and showed the refined artistic tastes of the French aristocracy. After losing royal favor in 1770 due to his opposition to Chancellor Maupeou's judicial reforms, Choiseul retired to his Chanteloup estate, where he remained a figure in French intellectual and cultural life until his death in 1785.

Before Fame

Étienne François de Choiseul was born into the lower nobility of Lorraine in 1719 and got his early education at the well-known Lycée Louis-le-Grand in Paris. Because his family's financial situation was limited, he had to create his own path to success through the military and good connections. Choiseul started his career in the military, working as an officer in the French Royal Army during the War of Austrian Succession.

His marriage to Louise Honorine Crozat du Châtel greatly improved his financial standing, as she brought significant wealth from her family's banking and trading fortune. This marriage gave Choiseul the resources he needed to aim for higher diplomatic roles and make a name for himself at the court of Versailles. With his military experience, diplomatic skills, and new financial security, he was in a strong position for quick advancement in French government service during the 1750s.
