Biography
Irakli Garibashvili is a Georgian businessman and politician who has played a major role in Georgian politics since the 2010s. Born in 1982, he became well-known through his business ventures and co-founding the Georgian Dream political party. He served as Prime Minister of Georgia twice: from 2013 to 2015 and again from 2021 to 2024.
Garibashvili became Prime Minister for the first time in 2013, making him one of the youngest heads of government in the world at age 31. During this time, he focused on economic reforms and strengthening Georgia's international relations. His first term ended in 2015, after which he remained active in Georgian politics and business.
After a six-year break from being Prime Minister, Garibashvili returned to the role in 2021. His second term involved dealing with domestic and international challenges, including regional tensions and economic recovery efforts. Throughout both terms, he stayed with the Georgian Dream party, which he had helped create as a political option in Georgia.
As a businessman, Garibashvili has been involved in various ventures, but his political career has been more prominent. His roles in business and politics show how private sector experience and public service mix for many Georgian leaders today. His time as Prime Minister has made him one of the most well-known political figures in modern Georgian history.
Before Fame
Garibashvili grew up during Georgia's transition after the Soviet Union collapsed, a time when the country was gaining independence and building new political and economic systems. Born in 1982, he experienced the chaotic 1990s, marked by civil conflicts and economic troubles, which influenced how his generation approached governance and business.
His rise in politics came through his business ventures and his role in founding the Georgian Dream party. This political group started as an opposition in Georgian politics, challenging the existing political powers and eventually becoming the ruling party that lifted Garibashvili to top government positions.
