Manuel Eugenio Larrabure y Unanue, born on January 19, 1844, in Lima, Peru, became a leading figure in Peru's public life during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He worked in law, journalism, diplomacy, politics, and history, playing a key role as Peru tried to rebuild and find a new direction after years of turmoil and the damaging War of the Pacific with Chile.
