Biography

Rafic Bahaa El Deen al-Hariri was a Lebanese businessman and politician who became a key figure in modern Lebanese history. Born on November 1, 1944, in Sidon, he came from a modest background to become a billionaire entrepreneur before entering politics during Lebanon's post-civil war rebuilding phase. He was Prime Minister of Lebanon twice, from 1992 to 1998 and again from 2000 to 2004, leading five cabinets and becoming the first prime minister after the civil war.

Hariri was instrumental in ending the Lebanese Civil War through his involvement in the Taif Agreement, which brought the 15-year conflict to an end. His business skills and wealth, which once placed him among the world's 100 richest individuals and the fourth-richest politician globally, uniquely positioned him to lead Lebanon’s rebuilding efforts. He led the large-scale reconstruction of Beirut's downtown area, turning it into a modern commercial and financial center.

Throughout his political career, Hariri managed complex regional challenges while working to restore Lebanon's status as a regional hub. His first term as prime minister coincided with heightened tensions between Israel and Lebanon, particularly after the Qana massacre. Nonetheless, his second term saw notable diplomatic successes, including Israel’s withdrawal from Southern Lebanon in 2000, ending an 18-year occupation. During his years in office, he kept a careful balance with Syria’s Ba'athist government while working on policies for Lebanese sovereignty and economic recovery.

Hariri's life was tragically cut short on February 14, 2005, when he was killed in a suicide truck bomb explosion in Beirut. The assassination sent shockwaves across Lebanon and the region, leading to large protests known as the Cedar Revolution. Four Hezbollah members were later charged with the assassination, with Unit 121 leader Salim Ayyash eventually found guilty by the Special Tribunal for Lebanon. The tribunal finished its proceedings in 2023, convicting three Hezbollah members while finding no proof that the group’s senior leadership orchestrated the attack. Hariri's death sparked major political changes, leading to the withdrawal of Syrian troops and security forces from Lebanon.

Before Fame

Hariri was born into a middle-class Sunni Muslim family in Sidon, a city in southern Lebanon. He went to Beirut Arab University to study business administration. His rise started in the early 1970s when he moved to Saudi Arabia and got into the construction industry during the oil boom.

He made his wealth with his construction company, landing major contracts for Saudi Arabia's expanding infrastructure projects. His business success was helped by his close ties with the Saudi royal family, especially King Fahd. By the 1980s, he had branched out from construction into real estate, banking, and telecommunications, amassing a fortune that later allowed him to step into Lebanese politics during the country’s key rebuilding period.
