Biography

Fan Li was a Chinese political advisor, military strategist, and entrepreneur in the Spring and Autumn period of the 5th century BCE. Born in the state of Chu, he became a key figure in ancient Chinese politics through his service to King Goujian of Yue. Fan Li was instrumental in Yue's comeback, helping it rise from a crushing defeat to eventually defeat the powerful state of Wu.

As King Goujian's chief advisor, Fan Li crafted and executed a long-term plan for Yue's recovery after their embarrassing loss to Wu in 494 BCE. His advice covered military tactics, diplomatic strategies, economic reforms, and psychological warfare. He is credited with devising the famous strategy involving Xi Shi, one of the Four Beauties of ancient China, sent to Wu's court to distract King Fuchai and weaken his determination. This, along with other tactical efforts, played a significant role in Wu's downfall in 473 BCE.

After Yue's victory over Wu, Fan Li showed remarkable political savvy by understanding the risks of staying in court after their success. He knew that King Goujian, though grateful, might see successful advisors as potential threats in peacetime. So, Fan Li chose to leave political life at his peak. He changed his name to Tao Zhugong and left the court, taking Xi Shi with him.

In his life after politics, Fan Li became one of China's first documented successful entrepreneurs. He ventured into various businesses and gained considerable wealth through trade. His success in business made him a model for Chinese merchants, and he is still honored today as a patron saint of business. Fan Li's shift from political advisor to successful businessman showed his adaptability and understanding across different areas of life.

Besides his political and business achievements, Fan Li also contributed to Chinese philosophical thought, especially in statecraft and practical wisdom. His writings and sayings show a deep grasp of human nature, political dynamics, and the ups and downs of fortune. His decision to retire at the height of success became an example of wise behavior in Chinese culture, highlighting the importance of knowing when to advance and when to step back.
