Sunshu Ao, who lived from around 630 BCE to 593 BCE, was a key figure in the State of Chu during the Eastern Zhou dynasty. As a court minister and eventually the Prime Minister under King Zhuang of Chu, he stood out as a skilled administrator and an engineer whose practical work improved the agriculture and economy of his state. His career is an example of both political skill and technical creativity in ancient Chinese history. His contributions were acknowledged by those in his time and later chronicled by historians as essential to Chu's success.

Details about Sunshu Ao's early life are limited in historical records, but he is thought to have been born around 630 BCE in the State of Chu. This was a powerful kingdom in the Yangtze River basin in central and southern China. During the Eastern Zhou period, authority was fragmented, and regional states competed for power. Despite this, scholars and administrators with practical talent had the chance to rise to high positions. In this setting, Sunshu Ao caught the attention of King Zhuang of Chu, one of the most notable rulers of the Spring and Autumn period. Recognizing his abilities, King Zhuang made him Prime Minister.
