Biography
Fouad Twal was born on October 23, 1940, in Madaba, Jordan, a city known for its Christian heritage and early mosaics. He studied at the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy in Rome, a school known for training Vatican diplomats and senior Church officials. This education gave him the theological background and diplomatic skills that influenced much of his career in the Latin Church across the Middle East and beyond.
Twal became a priest and advanced within the Catholic Church in the region, eventually taking on senior roles. He was the Archbishop of Tunis before taking a leading position in the Holy Land. His appointment as Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem in 2008 made him head of one of Christianity's most historically and spiritually important areas, responsible for Catholic communities in Israel, Palestine, Jordan, and Cyprus.
As Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, Twal also served as Grand Prior of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem, dedicated to supporting the Catholic Church in the Holy Land. He was also President of the Assembly of Catholic Ordinaries of the Holy Land, coordinating the pastoral work of various Catholic rites in the area. These roles required him to handle the complex religious, political, and interfaith issues in one of the world's most disputed regions.
During his time as Patriarch, Twal was a strong voice for the rights of Christians in the Middle East, highlighting the emigration of Christian communities from the Holy Land and nearby areas. He often spoke about the need for a peaceful solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and stressed the importance of dialogue among Christians, Muslims, and Jews. His leadership coincided with significant regional unrest, including the Arab Spring and ongoing tensions in Palestinian territories, influencing his public ministry.
Twal retired as Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem in 2016, having reached the age for retirement. He was succeeded by Pierbattista Pizzaballa. Throughout his career, he received various state honors from France, Italy, Portugal, and the Order of Jerusalem, showing his broad diplomatic reach and the respect he earned from governments with historical connections to the Christian communities of the Holy Land.
Before Fame
Fouad Twal grew up in Madaba, a city in Jordan with a large Christian population and a long history of continuous Christian presence. In the mid-twentieth century, he experienced the political changes that were reshaping the Arab world, including the effects of the 1948 Arab-Israeli War and the resulting wave of Palestinian refugees, many of whom were Christian. This background influenced his sensitivity to the political and humanitarian aspects of Christian life in the Middle East.
His education at the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy in Rome put him among a select group of clergy trained for high-level Church service and diplomatic work. The Academy, often seen as the Vatican's training ground for diplomats, helped him understand the connection between faith, diplomacy, and international relations. This training was crucial for his roles that involved working with governments, international organizations, and other religious communities around the world.
