Biography

Haider Jawad Kadhim al-Abadi was born on April 25, 1952, in Baghdad, Iraq. He studied electrical engineering at the University of Technology in Iraq and then did advanced studies at the University of Manchester in England. His engineering background later influenced how he approached governance and policy-making in his political career.

Al-Abadi stepped into Iraqi politics after Saddam Hussein's regime was overthrown in 2003. He was the Minister of Communication from 2003 to 2004 in Iraq's first government after Hussein. During this time, he focused on rebuilding the country's telecommunications infrastructure, which had been damaged during years of conflict and sanctions. His technical knowledge helped tackle the practical issues of restoring Iraq's communication networks.

On August 11, 2014, President Fuad Masum named al-Abadi as Prime Minister to take over from Nouri al-Maliki, and the Iraqi parliament approved his role on September 8, 2014. He took charge during a tough time for Iraq, as ISIL controlled large parts of the country, including key cities like Mosul and Ramadi. His government worked closely with international coalition forces on large military operations to reclaim these areas.

From 2014 to 2018, al-Abadi led the military campaign against ISIL, which reached its peak with the liberation of Mosul in 2017 and the final victory over the terrorist group. The operations required careful coordination between Iraqi security forces, Kurdish Peshmerga fighters, Shia militias, and international coalition air support. His leadership during this time brought him international recognition, including being named in Time magazine's 100 Most Influential People of 2018.

Al-Abadi left office in October 2018 amid rising domestic issues, including protests about economic conditions, corruption, and poor public services. Although he succeeded militarily against ISIL, his government was criticized for the slow pace of reconstruction and ongoing sectarian tensions. His departure marked the end of a key period in modern Iraq.

Before Fame

Growing up in Baghdad, Al-Abadi took advantage of Iraq's focus on education in technical fields and engineering programs. He graduated from Markaziyah High School and studied electrical engineering. He chose to further his education at the University of Manchester, highlighting the connections many Iraqi professionals had with international academics in the 1970s and 1980s.

His rise in politics was influenced by the changes in Iraq after the 2003 invasion. Being a Western-educated engineer with technical skills, al-Abadi fit the profile of professionals the new Iraqi government wanted to hire for rebuilding the country. His background helped him connect Iraq’s immediate post-war needs with the technical know-how needed for rebuilding infrastructure.
