Biography

Mohammed Shia' al-Sudani was born on March 4, 1970, in Baghdad, Iraq. He got his education at Baghdad College and then studied agricultural engineering. His background in this field helped shape his approach to Iraq's economic and rural development issues.

Al-Sudani started his political career locally, working first as the mayor of Amarah and then as the governor of Maysan province. These roles gave him hands-on experience with regional administration and the specific challenges in Iraq's southern provinces. During his time in Maysan, he focused on improving infrastructure and local economic conditions, building a reputation as an effective leader.

Throughout his career, al-Sudani has taken on several ministerial roles in different government administrations. He was the minister of labour and social affairs and also temporarily held positions in ministries such as industry and minerals, trade, migration and the displaced, finance, agriculture, and human rights. This wide-ranging experience provided him with a comprehensive understanding of Iraq's government operations and policy issues.

In October 2022, al-Sudani became the Prime Minister of Iraq after lengthy political talks and a deadlock. His appointment followed the Iraqi parliament's approval of his cabinet, ending a year-long political crisis. As Prime Minister, he's concentrated on economic reforms and fighting corruption, using his ministerial background to tackle Iraq's deep-rooted issues.

Since becoming Prime Minister, al-Sudani has also served as acting minister of defense starting in 2026. His government aims to reduce Iraq's reliance on oil and strengthen institutions. In 2025, The Muslim 500 recognized him as one of the most influential Muslim politicians, highlighting his impact on Iraqi and regional politics.
