Biography
Harini Nireka Amarasuriya was born on March 6, 1970, in Colombo, Sri Lanka. She pursued her education abroad at the University of Delhi, Macquarie University in Australia, and the University of Edinburgh in Scotland, focusing on sociology and social sciences, which shaped her academic career. Upon returning to Sri Lanka, she worked as an academic for about ten years at the Open University of Sri Lanka, where she was involved in teaching, research, and trade union activism through the Federation of University Teachers' Association. Her academic work was closely aligned with issues of social justice, child rights, and education policy in Sri Lanka.
Amarasuriya moved into formal politics through the National People's Power coalition, led by the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna party, headed by Anura Kumara Dissanayake. In 2020, she was selected by the NPP as a National List Member of Parliament, allowing her to join the legislature without running for a direct seat. In parliament, she became well-known for addressing education, social welfare, and democratic governance issues, significantly raising her public profile leading up to the 2024 elections.
In September 2024, after Anura Kumara Dissanayake was elected President of Sri Lanka, Amarasuriya was appointed as the 16th Prime Minister, becoming the third woman to hold this office after Sirimavo Bandaranaike and Chandrika Kumaratunga. She was also named as interim minister for several areas, including justice, health, women, education, trade, and industries, highlighting both the transitional state of the new government and the confidence that the new president had in her. Her appointment was historically significant as she was the first female Prime Minister of Sri Lanka since Kumaratunga in the 1990s.
After the NPP's significant victory in the 2024 Sri Lankan parliamentary election, Amarasuriya was reappointed as the 17th Prime Minister. Her personal electoral success was remarkable, with 655,289 votes—the second-highest ever received by a candidate in Sri Lankan parliamentary history. This overwhelming support showed her strong connection with the voters and the more extensive support for the NPP's focus on political reform and anti-corruption at a time when Sri Lanka was still recovering from a severe economic crisis in the early 2020s.
Before Fame
Amarasuriya grew up in Colombo during a time of intense political turmoil in Sri Lanka, marked by the long-standing conflict between the government and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam. She pursued her education in India, Australia, and Scotland, where she encountered various sociological traditions and research methods. This international experience influenced her perspective on social issues in Sri Lanka, especially regarding inequality, education access, and the rights of vulnerable groups.
After returning to Sri Lanka, she began an academic career at the Open University of Sri Lanka, which focuses on providing accessible education. Her role with the Federation of University Teachers' Association connected her to academic unionism and civic activism, separate from regular party politics. Her public intellectual work, including discussions on child rights and education policy, gradually built her reputation outside of academia, catching the attention of the NPP as they looked for credible candidates with expertise beyond the usual political landscape.
