Biography

Helena of Serbia was Queen of Hungary and Croatia by marrying King Béla II and later acted as regent when her son was a minor. Born after 1109 to Prince Uroš I of Serbia, she entered a political alliance when King Stephen II arranged her marriage to his cousin Béla II in 1129, strengthening ties between Serbia and the Hungarian Kingdom during a time of regional change.

As queen consort, Helena supported her husband's rule from 1131 until his death in 1141. Béla II worked to stabilize Hungary following a turbulent succession. Helena had several children with him, including three future Hungarian kings: Géza II, Ladislaus II, and Stephen IV. Her brother Beloš also gained influence in Hungarian politics, further solidifying her position at court.

After Béla II died in 1141, Helena took on the regency with her brother Beloš because her eldest son, Géza II, was still too young. The regency lasted until September 1146, when Géza came of age. During these five years, Helena and Beloš kept the kingdom steady, managing both internal noble factions and external threats from neighboring powers. Their shared regency was unusual, as foreign-born queens rarely held such direct political power in medieval Hungary.

Helena's impact continued even after her regency due to her sons' reigns. She died sometime after 1146 in Székesfehérvár, the traditional coronation city of Hungarian kings. Through her children's reigns and the political alliances formed during her regency, her Serbian connections continued to affect Hungarian court politics for years. Her successful handling of the complex relations between Hungarian nobility and foreign influences showed the crucial part royal women could play in medieval Central European politics.

Before Fame

Helena was born into Serbia's ruling family as the daughter of Prince Uroš I, who led Serbian territories in the early 12th century. During this time, Serbian principalities were under Byzantine influence but retained some autonomy. Her upbringing likely prepared her for the strategic marriages that were key in medieval politics.

Her marriage to Béla II in 1129 was a strategic move by King Stephen II of Hungary, aiming to bolster his cousin's position and form alliances with neighboring Slavic rulers. Although Béla II was not yet king at the time of the marriage arrangement, this Serbian connection helped him when he became king of Hungary in 1131.
