Biography

Hernán Siles Zuazo, born on March 21, 1914, in La Paz, Bolivia, was the son of former Bolivian president Hernando Siles. Trained as a lawyer, he became politically active during a time of major social and economic change in Bolivia, becoming a key figure in the country's 20th-century history. He co-founded the Movimiento Nacionalista Revolucionario (MNR), which significantly changed Bolivia's political system through revolution and reform.

Siles Zuazo was a key player in the Bolivian National Revolution of April 1952, briefly serving as interim president right after the MNR took power. He then became Bolivia's 27th Vice President from 1952 to 1956 under President Víctor Paz Estenssoro. During this time, the revolutionary government made major changes like introducing universal suffrage, nationalizing tin mines, and implementing agrarian reform. He later served as the 46th President from 1956 to 1960, focusing on stabilizing an economy struggling with inflation, with help from international financial entities.

After his presidency ended in 1960, Siles Zuazo spent years in opposition and exile during a period of military coups and authoritarian rule in Bolivia. He was a strong advocate for democracy and became a symbol of resistance against military control. His bravery during this time earned him respect across political lines, and he was crucial in forming opposition groups against military governments in the 1970s.

He returned to the presidency from 1982 to 1985 during a national crisis, guiding Bolivia back to democratic civilian rule after nearly two decades of mainly military governance. His administration faced hyperinflation, social unrest, and a debt crisis, challenges that proved too complex to solve fully. In a notable move, he decided to call early elections and hand over power before his term ended, highlighting his dedication to constitutional governance over his political career. He passed away on August 6, 1996, in Montevideo, Uruguay, where he was seeking medical treatment.

Before Fame

Growing up in La Paz with a former president as his father, Hernán Siles Zuazo was steeped in Bolivian politics from a young age. He studied law and came of age during Bolivia's tough period following the Chaco War against Paraguay from 1932 to 1935. This war was a huge blow to the nation's confidence in the old ruling class and led to a generation of veterans and thinkers who were politically radicalized.

This national crisis and the push for change led many young Bolivian professionals, including Siles Zuazo, to embrace revolutionary nationalist politics. In 1941, he helped co-found the MNR with Víctor Paz Estenssoro and others, aiming to create an anti-oligarchic, nationalist party focused on reclaiming Bolivia's natural resources and expanding political rights to the indigenous majority and working classes. His early activism laid the groundwork for his crucial role in 1952.
