Biography

Lucius Vibullius Hipparchus Tiberius Claudius Atticus Herodes, or Herodes Atticus, was born in Marathon in 101 AD into a wealthy Athenian family with Roman citizenship. His father, Tiberius Claudius Atticus Herodes, built the family wealth and secured their standing in both Greek and Roman society. Herodes received an excellent education, studying rhetoric and philosophy with the best teachers. He became a key figure of the Second Sophistic movement, which aimed to revive classical Greek literary and rhetorical traditions during Roman times.

His career followed the traditional Roman political path, showing great success in both military and civilian roles. He served as a Roman senator and became a consul in 143 AD, one of the top roles in the Roman Empire. Known for his skills in oration and teaching, he was appointed to teach rhetoric to future emperors Marcus Aurelius and Lucius Verus. This role gave him influence at the imperial court and built strong ties with the Antonine dynasty.

Herodes married Appia Annia Regilla, a rich Roman noblewoman, whose family boosted his status even more. Together, they started a large public works program throughout Greece. Their projects included building theaters, stadiums, aqueducts, and public buildings in Athens, Olympia, and various cities in Asia Minor. Notable works like the Odeon of Herodes Atticus in Athens and the Nymphaeum at Olympia showed his dedication to engineering and urban planning.

While he achieved much, his life also had personal tragedy. Around 160 AD, his wife Regilla died under suspicious circumstances, leading to murder accusations against Herodes. Although he was never convicted, the scandal affected his later years. Despite this, he continued his public works and teaching until his death in Marathon in 177 AD, living through one of the Roman Empire's most prosperous times.

Before Fame

Born into a well-known family in Marathon, Herodes Atticus inherited both significant wealth and the connections needed to succeed in the Roman imperial system. His father had skillfully handled the political scene of Roman Greece, making the family prominent in both Athens and Rome. Herodes received the best education available, studying under famous teachers of rhetoric and philosophy to prepare for a career in public service.

The early 2nd century AD was a great time for ambitious Greeks to rise within the Roman Empire. The Antonine emperors supported Greek culture and learning, creating opportunities for educated elites like Herodes to advance through imperial service. His natural talent in oratory, along with his family's resources and connections, placed him in a perfect position to take advantage of this cultural revival and achieve significant influence and responsibility.
