Biography
Hong Chau was born on June 25, 1979, in a refugee camp in Thailand to Vietnamese parents who had left Vietnam in the late 1970s. A Vietnamese Catholic church in New Orleans, Louisiana, sponsored Chau and her family, allowing them to move to the United States. She was raised in New Orleans, attending Eleanor McMain Secondary School and then the Louisiana School for Math, Science, and the Arts. She studied film at Boston University College of Communication, where she laid the groundwork for her acting career.
Chau first gained attention through her role in the HBO series Treme, which aired from 2010 to 2013 and was set in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. She then had a supporting role in Paul Thomas Anderson's film Inherent Vice in 2014. Her career took off in 2017 when she starred in Alexander Payne's science fiction comedy Downsizing with Matt Damon. This role earned her several nominations for Best Supporting Actress, including from the Golden Globes and Screen Actors Guild, giving her much wider recognition.
